"About exhibitions"
My experience at exhibitions goes back many years, initially as a visitor and then as an exhibitor. As a visitor I have seen almost everything, as whether it interested me or someone close to me, walking the long routes of the exhibitions I insatiably enjoyed every kind of object and service.
Of course, the perspective from which you see or participate in everything (as a visitor or as an exhibitor) makes a big difference.
An exhibition can be anything from a playground to...a moment that will change your life forever. Always very enjoyable and a little tiring. Now on the other hand as an exhibitor the exhibition is unfortunately not enjoyable but very tiring and you always hope it will be creative in the end. The exhibition starts many days or weeks before and ends quite a while later, for each exhibitor.
Given my invitation from the TDI/SDI headquarters in America to attend the annual dealer meeting, I found a unique opportunity to attend one of the most important diving equipment exhibitions in the world. The famous DEMA that we all read about every year in diving magazines.
Where and when did DEMA take place?
DEMA is held in the USA every year in a different location. Sometimes in New Orleans, sometimes in Las Vegas, sometimes in Houston, Texas like this year. New Orleans is known for JAZZ music, Las Vegas is known for its casinos (and not only...) and Houston is known for NASA, the Houston Rockets (Basketball), the Astros (Baseball), Texans (American football - Rugby)... The exhibition was held at the George Brown Convention Center and lasted from October 13 to 16, 2004. It was truly a very spectacular and meaningful trip for me. Moreover, it was the first time I visited the USA.
Visa
The Visa issuance process is not as complicated as they say, but it is a first step from this country to the other side of the Atlantic. Methodical and organized, they check you (very politely and professionally) on why you are going, who you are and of course, the best part is they take your photo and digitally take your fingerprints!!! Fortunately, I was judged: Not Suspect...
The journey
The trip, in addition to its high cost, as you can imagine, was very long. I traveled with KLM. The flight lasted 3 ½ hours and I arrived at the Amsterdam airport. Drizzling rain and the classic image of Amsterdam, which I have visited on other occasions, captivated me. I could not resist the temptation since I had a 4-hour wait, so I took a taxi which took me to the historic center of the city. Wonderful old buildings, rivers with floating restaurants, ducks dancing on the water, the famous "red light district", the country of great painters and of course many small but wonderful restaurants.
I spent quite a while in one of them because on the one hand it had an amazing chef and on the other hand it was raining outside as usual. After a high-level culinary delight, as we say in diving before the meal (appetizers), during the meal, and after the meal (dessert), I took a taxi and left in a flash for the airport since as a modern Greek I was behind my time... With the usual procedures I boarded and the long journey over the Atlantic began. The journey lasted 10 hours and 45 minutes. What else can you do on a flight than eat constantly, watch movies, read and meet new people. Oh!! and of course admire the clouds.
The first impression USA, Texas, Huston
Inspired by the movies, I imagined Texas and Houston as a desert with cacti and the city in the middle of nowhere, but the reality was completely different. Dense forests cover the wider area of Houston, large roads that disappear into the horizon lead to the city dominated by large skyscrapers. The population of Houston is approximately 35,000,000 people.
At the non-luxury airport, I went through security, where I was fingerprinted again. Then a taxi and straight to the luxurious Hilton Americas hotel, which is directly connected!!! to the George Brown Convention Center, where DEMA would be held.
The hotel was flooded with people from the exhibition. Everywhere badges, t-shirts of organizations, schools / diving centers, manufacturers etc.... here diving flags from there sharks passing by... I refused to sleep on the trip and I don't plan to sleep now so I slept late with the aim of avoiding Jet Langue the next morning and I succeeded. After spending two days in the SDI/TDI meeting room the long-awaited day of the exhibition arrived.
The exhibition
The exhibition center is impressive for its volume, its simple design and its discreet luxury. A large advertising sign dominates the front and top of it, stating DEMA SHOW 13-16 OCTOBER 2004. The view across from the exhibition is particularly impressive from the skyscrapers.
The process begins by going to the counter where you pay $50 and register. They issue you an entry badge that also states your status. That is, whether you are a visitor, exhibitor, or any other.
My job title was Regional Manager TDISDI & PRESS.
Quite disappointing was the moment when, upon seeing my passport, they asked me to confirm if my name was Athens. Unfortunately, all of those at the counter were unaware of where Athens was and when I managed to explain to them about Athens, Greece, the Olympic Games, they replied... Ah!! you don't have the Coliseum!!!! In fact... anyway... I explained as much as I could and set off for the exhibition.
The structure of the exhibition stands was different from what we are used to in our country as the exhibitors' spaces were not located in the usual rooms for us but in a free arrangement which made the exhibition less formal, more joyful. However, its structure was also less tangible, as a result of which you had to organize yourself so as not to miss an exhibitor. Many free magazines everywhere, colorful advertisements with incredible destinations, amazing virgin islands lost in the Pacific Ocean, breathtaking videos played everywhere & made you wonder if such a paradise exists on earth? A large part of the exhibition ceiling was covered with colorful balloons and the exhibitors with the subject of amateur diving succeeded the very many exhibitors with the subject of Technical diving. Many musicians played every rhythm you can imagine...Latin, rumba, rock 'n' roll...
• Upon entering and to the right of the entrance, a large pool with a depth of approximately 1 ½ meters had been set up in which anyone had the opportunity to wear a one-piece suit and do a wonderful Discover scuba (introduction to diving), a first experience of autonomous diving. An important "event" that took place in the pool from the first day was the presentation by Scuba Training International of the Mini B. A very easy-to-use system that consists of a stylish backpack that contains a filling bag, a filling system for it and 2 second stages as well as a console with a manometer and depth gauge. Of course, a small volume bottle. A system that is becoming more and more popular in the USA for shallow diving in the most convenient way.
• Next stand: From here the exotic diving centers begin Aruba, Caribbean, Maldives, Mexico, Costa Rica, Galapagos, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Great Australian Barrier Reef... and many more!!! best destinations... that made me melancholy and think about many issues... Travel packages are incredibly many, in a plurality of destinations and activities. The dreams of a scuba diver, paradise beaches on small exotic islands lost in the archipelago..., atolls, underwater caves, shipwrecks, reefs, corals and fish, many fish from whale sharks, barracudas, dolphins, sharks, giant manta rays, turtles... etc. Accommodation in water bungalows, Polynesian cuisine, music, SPA and whatever else our soul desires.
• Next stand: We see a new design for scuba diver's flippers, the fish flipper. Its material is semi-rigid and is available in many colors. Its manufacturers explained to me a theory according to which this flipper maximizes and utilizes the energy received from the scuba diver's flipper. The opposite direction of the extension's movement creates thrust... Hmm... I'll tell you once I try them. Anyway, they were cute.
• Next stand: The Flash Gordon sandal!!! Now in this case, draw your own conclusions. According to the designers-manufacturers, this extension from the outside of the diver's foot works wonders. They almost convinced me that I would go like a rocket. I would definitely like to try this. However, it is a given that all these people who design and promote a product commercially (spending a respectable amount of money) have thought it through well and support its effectiveness and application with some scientific evidence. Information about this can be found at www.freedomfins.com
• Next booth: In the next booth there was a transparent tank where inside was a scuba diver who demonstrated a wireless communication system with a writing system (sign). She wrote a question on her sign and someone from outside received her message on his sign, he then wrote the answer on his sign and she received it inside the tank. As long as I watched it, it worked flawlessly. Given that the test communication distance did not exceed 1 or 1 ½ meters, we will expect to see its successful application at a greater distance. For example, the scuba diver is 50 meters from the shore and 18 meters deep. The total distance from the surface person will be 55 meters, will communication be as good as that of the exhibition?
• Next stand: "Aquasketch", an underwater writing board that had a roll of writing material (Photo 12 or scan from the brochure). Every time a writing surface was full, you turned the roll and clean material came to the writing surface. The positive thing is that you could write a newspaper... underwater, the negative is that it is bulky on our wrist.
• Next stand: The Diver Alert Network stand, which is rich in materials. Here I saw the awareness of divers on safety and support issues. Don't forget that America is a country where lawsuits rain down. The unproven proper organization of safety rules/measures, the unproven proper support of a diver by his instructor, companion or partner in an incident always has legal consequences. At the stand you could find everything from First Aid and Oxygen Management materials to diver and school insurance. The DAN product catalog was particularly rich for anyone who wished to purchase it, which they were giving out for free at their stand along with the Alert Diver magazine.
• Next stand: The stand of two very serious diving equipment manufacturing companies from Europe. The companies Poseidon & Viking. From their exhibits I chose to photograph a heavy-duty drysuit with a professional helmet, mainly for dependent diving. The stand presented their entire range of products such as pressure regulators, valves, tanks, bcds, etc. European design and reality which is very positive for me.
• Next stand: Delta Technology. (English) Mr. Kevin Geer is one of the most important designers - manufacturers of technical diving equipment such as Rebreathers & Mix Gas Computer. Excellent knowledge of the subject, an important presence in the field of technical diving. The VR2 and VR3 mix Gas computers as well as the Close Circuit Rebreather are excellent in all respects. As for the cost... we get what we pay for.
• Next stand: "Visual Eddy" (Eddy current Inspection of high pressure aluminum cylinders). Given the specificities of aluminum as a material for manufacturing cylinders, many inspection machines were presented at the exhibition. In particular, the inspection of threads to identify possible cracks, which is the most serious problem. Visual Eddy uses electromagnetic waves to inspect threads. Visual Eddy also has a small, simple means of visual inspection of threads. A pen light, a magnifying glass and an angled mirror. It goes without saying that the system with electromagnetic fields is the most appropriate for complete and correct inspection.
• Next stand: "Visual Plus 3". In the battle against KRAK in the threads of the aluminum bottle comes a very complete and sophisticated piece of equipment in my opinion, the "Visual Plus 3". It consists of a system - a hand arm with a positive thread which goes and "screws" into the shutter, this rotates in the thread "scanning" - detecting the material of the thread and displays what it sees on our computer to which we have connected it with ANALYTICAL & Three-dimensional visualization. Seeing it work I was impressed by the 100% completely successful work. It detects everything externally and internally of the mass of aluminum in the thread of the bottle. Its designers with whom I spent a lot of time gave me an adequate seminar on the subject. I am glad that I use steel bottles. This machine connects to our PC and works with Windows 98 and of course the newer versions of it.
• Next stand: Trimix Auto blender. Given that many people dive deeper than 40 - 45 meters, Trimix mixtures are becoming increasingly necessary, popular and safe. For the Trimix mixture, one must take an Advanced Gas blending school, purchase mixers, O2 & He analyzers, and much more... With the Trimix Autoblender, an operator can create any Trimix or EANitrox with an O2 content of up to 40% with constant computer control. With 30 minutes of training from what the manufacturer told us, anyone can handle it.
• Next stand: Close Circuit Rebreather "PRISM Topaz". Another piece of art, in the field of Rebreathers, of course of American origin. Of excellent quality in its field. Widely used in this country and with very good safety statistics. For all rebreathers (Rebreathers) a high level of training is required, meticulousness in the procedures of checking and preparing it before diving as well as full implementation of specific procedures during diving. The advantages of Rebreathers are many and very important (you already know them from articles) but special seriousness is required. It is not our classic regulator which as soon as we make an inspiratory effort transfers the mixture to our lungs.
• Next stand: NiteRider, the well-known company with lighting systems for many applications such as wreck diving, cave diving, deep diving, professional work, video, etc. A significant advantage is the very small battery, its long duration, the very small volume (and light) of the light. I could not resist the temptation and bought one, which before I could enjoy it, my friend who is crazy about similar pieces of art bought it for me immediately. The level of brightness and lighting in its use is truly excellent.
• Επόμενο περίπτερο: A.P.Valves.
• Next stand: Halcyon. Another well-known company (American), manufacturer of equipment specializing in technical diving. Lighting systems, Large Volume Buoyancy Regulators, Rebreathers. They have borrowed the term DIR: Do It Right, which as you understand has to do with everyone's opinion. Very good products. (Photo 22) Here we also met one of the owners of the company, Mr. Jarrod Jablonski, who is the President of the Technical Diving Educational Organization GUE (Global Underwater Explorers).
• Next stand: The well-known SDI/TDI (Scuba Diving International & Technical Diving International) or otherwise INTERNATIONAL TRAINING. Here we are dealing with a purely educational stand with a lot of color. With a very comprehensive range of educational materials (and as you know from our previous articles everything is in Greek) with advanced know-how. TDI specializes in Special form diving, with a long history and contribution to the field, it is rightly considered by many to be a leader in its field. SDI has joined the team of the greats along with the others of the RSTC, namely PADI, SSI etc... and with the dynamic of the younger generation it aspires to change a lot. I spent a lot of time talking with the president of the organization, Mr. Brian Carney. I attended with many legendary names of technical diving such as Mr. Joe Odom, Mr. Brett Gilliam...
• Next stand: RIX Industries. Designers and manufacturers of excellent quality HP & OIL Free diving air compressors. Very friendly, serious and very knowledgeable about the subject they deal with.
• Next stand: IANTD (International Association Nitrox & Technical Divers). No special introduction needed. Technical diving organization with a long history in technical diving. Names like that of the President of Ko Tom Mount and other important executives as well as Mr. Rurkowski have written their own history in the field of technical diving. In a simple and elegant stand there was the educational material of the organization.
• Next stand: MANTA (USA). A company that manufactures technical diving equipment with a small range. We know it for the reels it designs and manufactures for wreck and cave penetrations.
• Next stand: Diver Magazine (United Kingdom / England). One of the most well-known diving magazines in the diving industry in Europe, I spoke with the magazine's manager Alex Khachadourian, very approachable and professional. I noticed from the stand a very beautiful Atmosphere Travel Guide (Exposuit) with a maximum working depth of 365 meters!!! (don't ask the price...), 2-person submarines (Dual Deep worker) with a maximum working depth of 600 meters!!! For Deep, very Deep expeditions... (Photo 29 scanned from brochures).
• Next stand: Amphibico Amphibico is undoubtedly one of the best manufacturers in the sensitive sector of Housings for cameras & video cameras. With a wide range of options, it stands out for the quality of construction as well as for the many control functions it offers. The main material it uses is Aluminum. The company's range is complemented by electronic controls, monitors & lighting systems.
• Next stand: Belize Diving centers Amazing diving spots among other ideal diving destinations. Belize is between Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, San Salvador, Nicaragua in the Caribbean Sea and has many good hotels, diving centers and a very rich underwater diving world. Impressive stand.
• Next stand: SSI (Scuba Schools International) Another large, well-known and quality amateur training organization.
• Next stand: Ecuador - Galapagos diving centers / Costa Rica - Coco Islands The best diving trip and experience you can have. The ultimate destinations for me. They are expensive but worth it. Run before civilization arrives.
• Next booth: Global (Global MFG Corporation) Company with a lot of products, Clips, bags, mixers, flags, adaptors, Ultrasonic, Pressure Regulator Control Systems, Regulator Control Chambers, Bottle Cleaning Systems, Filters, almost everything. Every year we meet them at exhibitions.
• Next booth: NAVSEA (Navy Experimental Diving Unit) The presence of the US Navy frogmen was impressive as their booth contained important historical exhibits and impressive equipment such as Rebreather & Helmets etc. I had the pleasure of discussing with the uniformed personnel many topics including: Navy Experimental Diving Unit, NEDU Mission, NEDU Vision, NEDU Team, fleet diving, Explosive Ordnance Disposal, (EOD), Special Warfare (SPECWAR), Research, Development, Testing & Evaluation, NEDU Facilities, Ocean Simulation Facility (OSF) and many other topics.
• Next booth: Storm Case. This company boasts that it makes the best cases on the market. While the market makes them from Polypropylene or ABS, they use HPX High Performance Resin and many new materials.
και Papiamentu...
Since to make even a small comment about each exhibitor would require an entire issue, for those of you who wish more information, you can get it from the exhibition website www.demashow.com.
However, as a conclusion from the exhibition, I can say that I was excited by:
The next DEMA exhibition, 2005, will be held in Las Vegas.
Impressions from Huston
We said that Houston, Texas was full of greenery. Large streets where there was no car parked. Clean streets filled with big American cars. A well-organized and calm society with its schedule the same every day. The houses, either nestled in the greenery, or large skyscrapers with multi-story garages dominated. People do not circulate on the streets, and you do not find shops like here everywhere in every neighborhood but they are concentrated in large exhibition centers that are quite a long distance away. In them you find almost everything, from ice rinks, restaurants, shops to whatever you can imagine but as you rightly suspect they close at 10 pm.
Television is indescribably crappy, Realities all the well-known bullshit of modern consumer society. Oh!!! I mustn't forget... those of you who go, don't forget to go to the Cheese Cake Factory to enjoy your favorite from an incredibly wide variety of cheese cakes. It is located in the Galleria Shopping center.
NASA & Natural History Museum
It's worth stopping here because visiting Houston and not running to NASA & the Natural History Museum is unthinkable.
NASA, I take the taxi and after 45 minutes I arrive at a green grassy open area and enter the famous and famous National Aeronautics & Space Administration LYNDON B. JOHNSON SPACE CENTER. Now I feel like I'm really in Houston.
Natural History Museum
The Return
The return trip was indeed long, 10 ½ hours from Houston to Paris (which unfortunately I didn't get to see), and then 4 hours to Athens, but it was also enjoyable. Returning to Eleftherios Venizelos once again, I felt the joy of returning to our homeland.
