About us

Who we are and our work.

Our Journey

The Beginning (1982)

Our story begins in 1982 when George Petrou received his first NAUI Open Water diver certification with instructor Loukas Bistarakis in Mykonos. He continued his training with the next two amateur stars EOUDAATK/CMAS under Stavros Bakandreas at the Friends of the Coast Club, at the 2nd Port of Vouliagmeni, where he gained a realistic foundation in diving. The training with Stavros Bakandreas was crucial in developing his passion for diving and establishing the right fundamentals and mindset.

Environmental Consciousness

His ecological consciousness and behavior, love and respect for the flora and fauna of the underwater world set him apart and strongly differentiated him in the diving environment of that time.

Professional Development

After becoming a Divemaster with Ali Pourakbar, his passion for the seabed and education led him to become a PADI instructor. He then trained in the demanding but quality system of CMAS/EOUDA, achieving the highest level of 3*** EOUDA/CMAS Instructor.

Technical Diving Journey

Pursuing excellence in diving, he trained internationally (Egypt, England, Holland, Sweden) according to the Technical Diving International (TDI) standards. This opened new possibilities in:

  • Deep diving with mixed gases
  • Cave diving
  • Shipwreck diving
  • Scuba diving training

Formation of HUE (1995)

In Hurghada, Egypt, he received the highest level of training, becoming an Advanced Trimix Instructor Trainer from TDI. In 1995, he officially established the Hellas Underwater Explorers diving school and exploration team.

TDI/SDI Representation

A significant milestone for HUE was representing the American Amateur and Technical Diving organizations TDI/SDI for about a decade, during which they certified numerous divers and instructors. HUE specialized in Technical Diving training, with many of their students later becoming notable instructors and diving professionals.

Pioneering Through Challenges

During the "stone years" when diving was restricted by the state across most of Greece with minimal legal sites, HUE not only kept Technical Diving alive but developed it dynamically, operating with complete legitimacy and in cooperation with state and local authorities.

Educational Innovation

HUE introduced a new style of training characterized by:

  • Courtesy and professionalism
  • Highly realistic underwater practical exercises and conditions
  • Comprehensive technical infrastructure
  • Opportunity for students and members to apply their skills in exploratory missions

Vision

Hellas Underwater Explorers maintains its vision of maximally contributing to:

  • Upgrading the educational process
  • Increasing diving safety
  • Protecting the marine environment
  • Advancing technical diving
